How to wash a mattress protector correctly matters — washing one wrong can damage the waterproofing or shrink the fit. Here is the simple guide.
How often should you wash it?
Once a month for most households. After illness, spills or pets on the bed, wash it sooner.
What temperature?
Most mattress protectors — including all of ours — can be washed at 60 degrees. This kills dust mites and bacteria effectively. Check your label, as some delicate protectors require 40 degrees.
Can you tumble dry a mattress protector?
Most can be tumble dried on low heat. High heat damages the waterproof membrane over time. Air drying is always safest if you have time.
Can you iron it?
No. Never iron a waterproof mattress protector — heat destroys the waterproof layer permanently.
What about fabric softener?
Skip it. Fabric softener coats fibres and reduces absorbency, and can compromise waterproofing. Just wash without it.
When should you replace it?
If your protector no longer lies flat, has holes, or water soaks through instead of beading off — replace it. Good quality protectors last 2 to 3 years with monthly washing.
